ENT 600 Hiring an A-Team

ENT 600 Week 4

If you are trying to build a successful business, hire people that can help you build it.  Hiring A-Players not only helps you build your company, it also allows you to have a life. If you hire people that can run the company without you, the value of your company even goes up.  Everyone should look for A-Players, not just the human resources department.  To build a great team, you don’t just hire any employee.   Recruiting great team players is your competitive advantage.

As you begin to hire your A-Team, you must find employees that mesh with the culture of your business.  If you do hire an employee that does not fit, it is important to the business to resolve issues with the employee quickly.  Having an employee that disrupts your team can destroy a good work environment, company reputation, and the success of your company.  Many times a small company will try to only hire people that they know; also known as hiring from your inner circle.  As an entrepreneur, you should look outside your inner circle to hire the most qualified, skilled employees that you can find.  Building a great team can make or break your business.  Find an A-Team, your business is counting on it.

  1. Tina,
You make an interesting point about making sure that new employees acclimate to the company culture. I took a course in Organizational Communication last year and introduction and acclimation to company culture was a big part of my takeaway. Recruiting the right employees can be pointless if they aren’t onboarded properly. If new hires don’t feel like a part of the team they wont have to stay and you have to recruit all over again. I assume that this is what Herrenkohl meant by the coaching process.

  2. Tina,
I completely agree. Hire people who you know will allow you to walk away every once in a while. It is easy to get wrapped up in work and do things yourself because you know it will be done correctly. Hiring an A team will do nothing but grow your business and allow you to have a life outside of work. Another great point you made was fixes and or weeding out any employee issues may have. The old saying that one bad apple will spoil the whole basket. That is so true and no one needs this type of stress on top of running a successful business.

  3. Tina,
I think you have some great points about hiring a team to run your business. I think the most important thing you pointed out was fixing problems with culture as they pop up. One toxic person can bring down an entire company. I agree with you that fixing that issue can be the difference between success and failure.

    1. Brandon,
A good team means everything to a business. I really love to have an employee that stays a while. They usually can read my mind and life is so much easier. The business definitely reaps the benefit of a long time employee.
